Navalny’s health has deteriorated and he has lost consciousness in prison No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, FSIN said in a statement.
“The necessary medical interventions to Navalny did not yield positive results. Doctors determined that he died. The cause of death is being investigated.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov answered journalists’ questions on the issue.
“Doctors will conduct the necessary investigations,” Peskov said, adding that the Federal Penitentiary Service is investigating the causes of Navalny’s death within the framework of certain rules and that no instructions are needed for this.
Navalny’s punishment
Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny was arrested at the airport on January 17, 2021 on his return to the capital Moscow after receiving treatment in Berlin, Germany, for alleged poisoning.
Upon the request of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service, the case against Navalny was concluded in the Moscow City Court on February 2, 2021; Navalny’s 3.5-year suspended prison sentence, which was given as a result of a corruption case in the past, was converted to a normal prison sentence on the grounds that he did not fulfill the judicial control conditions.
In August 2023, a Russian court sentenced Navalny to 19 years in prison for forming an extremist group.
In January last year, Alexei Navalny was included in a list of people linked to terrorism and extremism in Russia.
