Italian farmers continue to protest against EU agricultural policies

Farmers in Italy continue to protest against the European Union's (EU) agricultural policies and are preparing to take their protests to the capital Rome

Protests by Italian farmers against the EU’s agricultural policies, especially the “Green Deal” program, and price hikes in the sector continue with large and small demonstrations from the north to the south of the country.

According to reports in the Italian press, farmers arriving with their tractors in the town of Orte, 1 hour away from the capital Rome, tried to block the roads with hay bales, but security forces did not allow this.

In addition to Orte, farmers took action with their tractors today in the town of Melegnano near Milan, Caserta, Udine, Viterbo and Santa Maria Capua Vetere near Naples.

Farmers signal march to Rome

Some farmers said they would travel from the north and south to the capital next week to show their reaction.

Danilo Calvani, one of the leaders of the farmers who met with the police on this issue, told the press, “We just left the police, there will be a demonstration. There will be another meeting on Monday evening, there are other investigations, but this protest will take place. We will announce the exact date on the evening of the 5th. We will not do it like in Italy, like in Brussels. We have not done so so far, and this allows us to reach Rome.”

Meanwhile, media reports said that the right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni was considering postponing or eliminating some taxes in the face of price hikes due to farmers’ protests.

A group of farmers, who had been protesting the situation for about a week at the entrance of different cities from the north to the south of the country, demonstrated in front of Milan’s Central Train Station on February 1, accompanied by security forces. On the same day, a demonstration of farmers protesting against EU leaders gathered in Brussels was eventful.

Prime Minister Meloni also said after the summit in Brussels that the EU had made “mistakes” in its agricultural policies and needed to make changes.

Farmers in action in Europe

Farmers in many EU countries, particularly in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Belgium, Poland, Italy and Hungary, are not satisfied with recent agricultural policies.

In most European countries, farmers are protesting with their tractors to draw attention to their hardships.

EU farmers are heavily critical of the Union’s agricultural policies, nature restoration targets, subsidy cuts, high energy, fuel and fertilizer costs as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war, cheap grain from Ukraine and water conservation measures.

Farmers criticize the EU for “making agricultural production more difficult by introducing strict rules on the use of carbon fertilizers and pesticides under the Green Deal”.
