British Defense Minister Grant Shapps welcomed the EU countries’ agreement to provide Ukraine with 50 billion euros in aid, saying the world cannot afford to pay for Russian leader Putin’s victory.
Shapps posted on the X platform, quoting Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s message thanking EU leaders for the decision to provide 50 billion euros in aid.
“The UK strongly welcomes our European partners joining us in providing more funding to Ukraine,” Shapps said. “The world cannot afford a Putin victory. With tyrants around the world watching, the cost is unimaginable.”
Every democratic nation must act now, Shapps said, to provide Ukraine with what it needs to defend the front line of freedom.
The EU, mobilized by the end of US financial aid, persuaded Hungary to agree on an additional 50 billion euro support package for Ukraine. Commenting on the EU leaders’ decision, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the US would try to put the financial burden of its support to Kiev on the shoulders of the EU, stressing that they were aware that Ukraine had problems and that the collective West also had such problems.
