Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke about the Montreux Convention, which has been frequently discussed in recent days and criticized by Ukrainian officials. Fidan said, “We will continue to implement the Montreux Convention to the letter. It is out of the question to even think about this issue, let alone discuss it.”

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a joint press conference with Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel in Sofia.
Foreign Minister Fidan said, “We will continue to implement the Montreux Convention to the letter. It is out of the question to even think about this issue, let alone discuss it.”
Earlier, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander said that the US intends to work with Turkey on navigation in the Black Sea. Wallander said the region needed to create a favorable environment in which the Black Sea would be fully open to commercial shipping. This was interpreted as a call for the termination of the Montreux Convention.
