A terrorist organization, believed to be PKK, tried to infiltrate a base area established within the scope of the Claw-Kilit operation in Northern Iraq. During the clashes that broke out during the infiltration attempt, 9 Turkish Armed Forces personnel were martyred. Four personnel were also wounded in the clashes. Previously, 12 Turkish soldiers were martyred in a clash with terrorist groups in Hakurk in the same region in the last week of December 2023.
While the funerals of 9 soldiers who lost their lives in a clash in the Pençe-Kilit operation zone were buried, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler, Chief of General Staff General Metin Gürak, Chief of National Intelligence Organization İbrahim Kalın, Head of Communications Fahrettin Altun and Presidential Advisor on Foreign Policy and Security Akif Çağatay Kılıç also attended the security meeting chaired by President Erdoğan in Dolmabahçe, Istanbul.

The statement is just a declaration of will. It says, “Turkey will never allow the establishment of a ‘terrorististan’ along its southern borders under any pretext and for any reason. Within the framework of our right to self-defense and bilateral agreements, our main priority is to permanently destroy wherever there is a terrorist threat, camp, shelter, formation or cluster, regardless of who is behind it.”
Why was the Security Meeting held at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul and not in the capital Ankara?
President Erdoğan was in Istanbul with his wife to check the pre-election preparations in line with the Party’s activities. Therefore, it can be said that the other participants of the meeting came to Istanbul from Ankara with the idea of not interrupting President Erdoğan’s Istanbul program.
It is also thought-provoking that the ‘Security Meeting’, which was announced to be held by the Presidential Communications Directorate and attended by the highest level officials, lasted 45 minutes. If each of them spoke for 10 minutes, that’s 70 minutes. Was the 45 minutes for TV cameras? Or was the previously planned process reviewed for the last time?
As a matter of fact, the fact that the notes in front of General Metin Gürak, the Chief of the General Staff, read “Operation Euphrates Shield” and “Operation Peace Spring” and “Syria” indicates that a technical planning was made before the meeting and presented to other stakeholders and Erdoğan at the Security Meeting.
As my dear friend Hayrettin Baydın, Turkish Sign Language Interpreter, stated; from a historical perspective, Dolmabahçe is a palace on the European side built with European architecture. It is also important in terms of the history of the Republic as it is the first Presidential residence.
Atatürk used this historical place for many years and his death took place here. Dolmabahçe Palace is an iconic place that came to the agenda with reconciliations during the AK Party period.
It can be said that this meeting was not held with the perspective of a unitary state, but with an imperial mind and reflex. According to some interpretations, the message may have been that we are ready for a return to imperial borders.

Due to the attacks against Turkish troops stationed in bases in Northern Iraq, the Turkish security services are focused on the region with their entire staff. This is evidenced by the Security meeting in which the former and new heads of National Intelligence Organization (MIT), the Minister of Defense, the Chief of General Staff and the Minister of Interior were present.
The public is not privy to the details of the meeting. Certainly, private matters were discussed, important issues were evaluated and what must be done was decided. The files and reports reflected in the photographs show that preparations are being made for a long-term military operation in the region that will yield lasting results.
Indeed, in my article dated 08-01-2024, I mentioned that the Turkish Armed Forces had strengthened its military presence in this region despite the unfavorable winter conditions, that the Turkish army would launch a larger operation and military operation than Syria in the near (?) future, the date of which is unclear for now, and that the Turkish military units on the Iranian border were on alert to eliminate any security threat that might come from the Iranian border.
A new phase is now underway to complete Turkey’s plan for a 30 km deep “safe zone” in northern Syria. Within the scope of this phase, a safe zone may be implemented in northern Iraq, including Mosul and Kirkuk. The legal arrangement needed at this point can be made at any time.
The general Demirel drew: Osman Pamukoğlu!…
Legendary Commander Osman Pamukoğlu is a phenomenon in the Turkish Armed Forces, who has been awarded the Distinguished Unit Cultivation Order 5 times and has been publicized both through conjuncture and serial documentaries. He is a book author. He is a war machine that knows no fear. He has doctrinal experience in irregular warfare.
However, as successful as he is in the fight against terrorism, it can be said that he is not sufficient in reading the global and regional conjuncture. This is also reflected in his speeches on TV programs. He is always in a hit-and-run mood. As a matter of fact, the dialog between Pamukoğlu and then President Süleyman Demirel, which is said to have led to Pamukoğlu’s retirement, can confirm this.
The claim that the dialogue between Demirel and Pamukoğlu during Demirel’s visit to a military outpost that was attacked, which started with President Demirel’s cancellation of an operation that pushed the borders of Iran, in which a terrorist camp was surrounded and an hour-long clash would have dealt a serious blow to the terrorist organization, on the grounds that “it would damage our relations with Iran”, played a role in his retirement.

Pamukoglu: How?.. What do you mean?!
Demirel: Prove them to me so that I can do something about them?

Osman Pamukoğlu, who is a disciplinary soldier but not a Mustafa Kemal, who registered with his electoral defeat that he was not a Mustafa Kemal, announced on June 23, 2011 that he had decided to close down the Rights and Equality Party HEPAR, of which he was the founder and honorary chairman on September 4, 2008, after the electoral defeat, but the party was not closed down at the congress held on July 10, 2011.
The party announced the end of its activities with an extraordinary convention held on April 21, 2019. It has once again become clear how accurate President Demirel was in his judgment about Osman Pamukoğlu.
Retired Generals do not understand the new concept!…
There is a quote attributed to the great Hun Emperor Attila the Hun: “If you have a problem at your borders, the only way to solve it is to expand your borders.”
In this context, unless we reach our borders, the terrorist organization, which carries out terrorist acts, especially through the borders of Northern Iraq and Syria, and which receives all kinds of logistical support from our so-called NATO ally, the United States, and the coalition forces led by it, cannot be stopped.

On December 28, 2023, retired Major General Osman Pamukoğlu was a guest on journalist Fatih Altaylı’s YouTube channel and made evaluations on Turkey’s Operation Claw-Kilit in Northern Iraq.
Pamukoğlu said, “Protecting the border is one thing, finding and destroying terrorists is another. There is only one formula in irregular warfare: Search, find, destroy! What base? Territory is not important in irregular warfare. The terrorist himself is important, we need terrorists.
I am against establishing bases across the border, we have nothing to do with land. We are looking for terrorists. We enter, destroy them in 3-4 days and leave. I went into Iraq 21 times and came out. Why? I don’t need to stay there.
You will swoop down and take it, like an eagle stalking its prey. You don’t settle there. The US lost 56,000 dead in Vietnam when its bases were raided. A base means you are fixed, you are being watched, you are being followed. If you have a base, you will be raided at the moment of weakness.”
The long and short of it is that in his speech, retired General Osman Pamukoğlu expressed his opposition to the establishment of bases beyond national borders and emphasized the aim of targeting terrorists instead of establishing bases.
In Turkish, “let’s just ensure the security of the existing borders!” But that is not the new concept. The architect of the new concept is Atilla the Great Hun emperor. His instruction from centuries ago is as follows: “If there is a problem on your borders, the only way to solve it is to expand your borders.”
