The UN 2023 World Food Security report has been published: 735 million people around the world face hunger

According to a report published by the United Nations, the number of people facing hunger has increased to an average of 735 million. The report noted that the number of people facing hunger has increased by 122 million since 2019 due to crises such as the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine and climate shocks.

Rome-based UN agencies shared the “UN 2023 World Food Security (SOFI)” report jointly prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who sent a video message to the launch of the report, said, “No one should go hungry.”

The report stated that the number of people facing hunger has increased by 122 million since 2019 due to the impact of multiple crises such as the coronavirus outbreak, the war in Ukraine and climate shocks.

It was noted that 691-783 million people in the world struggled with hunger last year, while the average figure was calculated as 735 million.

MANY PLACES FACING FOOD CRISES

Global hunger numbers stabilized between 2021 and 2022, but there are still many places in the world facing deepening food crises.

Progress has been made in reducing hunger in Asia and Latin America, but hunger is still on the rise in 2022 in West Asia, the Caribbean and all sub-regions of Africa, with Africa remaining the worst affected region.

“END HUNGER” GOAL WILL NOT BE ACHIEVED

The report emphasized that if the current trend continues, the goal of “ending hunger” set in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals will not be achieved.

Meanwhile, during the presentation of the report at FAO’s headquarters in Rome, Jose Rosero Moncaya, Director of FAO’s Statistics Unit, responded to a journalist’s question about the Black Sea Grain Initiative and said, “The Black Sea Grain Initiative is a good initiative to reduce and stabilize food prices, and I hope it will be renewed as FAO.”

Allison Oman Lawi, Deputy Director of WFP’s Nutrition Division, said that they find the Black Sea Grain Initiative positive and hope it will be renewed.
