Turkey is trying to recover from two major earthquake disasters. The first earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 and the second with a magnitude of 7.6 caused great destruction in Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Adana, Adıyaman, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kilis and Malatya. As search and rescue operations continue, the loss of life increased to 38,44 and the number of injured to 108,68.
The total number of personnel working in the region together with the field personnel assigned from AFAD, police, gendarmerie, MSB, UMKE, ambulance teams, volunteers, local security and local support teams reached 253 thousand 16. A total of 12 thousand 513 vehicles, including excavators, tow trucks, cranes, dozers, lorries, tractor trucks, tractor trailers, motor graders, vacuum trucks and similar construction equipment were dispatched to the disaster area.
”DISPLACEMENT OF 7.3 METRES”
Orhan Tatar, AFAD General Director for Earthquake and Risk Mitigation, said the earthquake caused displacement of up to 7.3 metres and a 400-kilometre surface rift.
“EQUIVALENT TO 500 ATOMIC BOMBS
Orhan Tatar, AFAD General Director for Earthquake and Risk Mitigation, stated that they analysed both earthquakes and said, “The effective time of the first earthquake was 65 seconds. The second earthquake had a destructive effect for 45 seconds. The region was shaken very violently for about 2 minutes.
Tatar explained that the energy released by the two earthquakes was equivalent to 500 atomic bombs.
AFAD, Ministry of Family and Social Services, Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Family and Social Services, Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Turkish Red Crescent and international countries and organisations dispatched 283 thousand 410 tents, 54 thousand 297 containers and 3 million 264 thousand 985 blankets to 10 cities heavily affected by the earthquake, and the installation of 172 thousand 225 tents was completed.
HATAY AIRPORT OPENED
Vice President Fuat Oktay made a statement regarding the latest situation of the airport in Hatay, which was damaged in the earthquake. Oktay said, “We have started to use Hatay Airport as of today for both evacuation and in-kind aid.”
ALL OPERATORS WILL NOT CHARGE FOR CALLS
Oktay also shared the information that GSM operators will provide free service for a month. Oktay said, “Türk Telekom, Turkcell and Vodafone will provide all calls free of charge for a month from the moment of the earthquake.”
