After months of resisting Russian attacks, Ukrainian forces went on the offensive with the help of weapons from the West, and Russia responded with a referendum in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.
After the referendum resulted in a decision to join Russia, Russia took action.
According to the statement made by the Kremlin, Moscow will take the official step tomorrow for the 4 regions that decided to be annexed to Russia by referendum.

‘IT WILL BE THE 9TH FEDERAL REGION’
On the other hand, the Moscow-based Vedomosti newspaper reported that the four regions where the referendum is ongoing will be made Russia’s ninth federal district together with Crimea.
The newspaper cited an unnamed Russian senator and a source close to the Crimean administration.
Western states and Kiev have called the referendum a “fraud” and have declared that the result will not be recognized.
Moscow held a similar referendum in Crimea, which it occupied in 2014, and annexed the territory after a 97 percent vote in favor of joining Russia.
Many countries, including Turkey, still recognize Crimea as Ukrainian territory.
