SHE HAD A SISTER
Queen Elizabeth II, whose full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, was born on April 21, 1926. Her uncle Edward VIII abdicated the throne to her brother George on December 11, 1936, when Elizabeth was only 10 years old. From that moment on, Princess Elizabeth became the future heir to the throne of her country. King George VI and his wife Elizabeth Bowes Lyon had another daughter, Margaret.
SPECIAL SCHOOL CREATED
After her uncle abdicated and her father became king, Elizabeth and her family moved from Kensington Palace to Buckingham Palace. Elizabeth, who received a special education, was especially interested in horses as a child. This curiosity continues to this day. Elizabeth took lessons in constitutional history from Henry Marten, the president rector of Eton College. She started to learn French in order to speak to her nanny. Later she became a pupil at a private school. This school was specially designed to bring her into contact with people of her own age.
THE YEARS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Shortly after her father’s accession to the throne, World War II broke out. When London began to be bombed during this period, veteran politician Lord Hailsham offered to take Elizabeth and her sister Margaret to Canada. But her mother Elizabeth, then known as the Queen Mother, did not want to send her children or go herself. She insisted on staying with her husband. In the meantime, Elizabeth and Margaret remained in the relative safety of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. From there they moved to Sandringham House in Norfolk.
THEY WERE MARRIED IN 1947
On November 9, 1947, her engagement was announced to her distant cousin Philip Mountbatten, a former Prince of Greece and Denmark and a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were married at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947; King George VI conferred the titles of Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron of Greenwich on Prince Philip before the wedding.
THEY WERE IN KENYA
Elizabeth was staying with Prince Philip in Sagana when her father died. The news of her father’s death was first sent to his officials in Nairobi. But because the telegram took a long time to decipher, Elizabeth learned of her father’s death hours later. The King’s death was first announced to Prince Philip. He too told his wife that he had lost his father. Rachel Bowie, the host of Royally Obsessed, said that Elizabeth did not want to be seen by photographers at the time. Elizabeth and Philip canceled the rest of the royal tour and immediately began preparations to return to London. But Elizabeth, who was shocked by the news of her father’s death, was not photographed by any photographer in those few days.
On a trip with her husband, while they were in Sagana, Kenya, she received the news that her father had died on February 6, 1952, and that she had succeeded him. She delivered her first address to Parliament on November 4, 1952. In 1953 he was officially crowned and the ceremony was televised for the first time in history.
PREPARATIONS TOOK 14 MONTHS
Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne on February 2, 1952 due to the death of her father. Her coronation ceremony was held a year later. This ceremony was also a first.
