The heat returns to Germany. By midweek, it is getting warmer and warmer – with temperatures reaching the 40-degree mark. Not until the weekend will thunderstorms bring the longed-for cooling.

Heat and hardly any cooling at night: With up to 39 degrees, it will be really hot again in the coming days. Especially the south and the east will be hit by the sometimes brutal heat. Once again, temperatures here will rise to over 35 degrees – with a trend towards 40 degrees. But also in the rest of the country it will be midsummer warm to hot.

Currently, the front of the hot air from the north of Africa is arriving in the southwest. Accordingly, up to 33 degrees are possible here again. Wednesday it will be 36 or 37 degrees in the hotspot region in the southwest, the high point will be Thursday with 39, maybe locally up to 40 degrees, before a cold front will cause a sharp drop in temperature until the weekend. The Upper Rhine will be even hotter. In contrast, it will remain somewhat cooler in the far north or in the coastal area with 25 to 27 degrees.

On Thursday, temperatures in the south and east will once again rise. That means in a wide strip from Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Baden-Württemberg to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Saxony 35 to 38, in places up to 39 or even 40 degrees are possible. Meanwhile, the northwest and the west will also still get highs around 30 degrees or above. At the same time, however, the sultriness will increase. With the approaching cold front, it will be thundery again.

Thunderstorms follow heat

With such energetic air masses, the potential of thunderstorms is always given. Thus, already on Thursday afternoon and evening from North Rhine-Westphalia to the North Sea area first, partly heavy thunderstorms may occur. In places with the danger of thunderstorms due to heavy rain, hail and squalls.

On Friday, the ominous and thundery air mass mix will continue to spread – still with the danger of thunderstorms. In the extreme south, it will remain sunny for a long time and correspondingly hot with up to 36 degrees. Behind it in the northwest and north it will be more pleasant and also fresher with a maximum of 20 degrees at the North Sea.

If, for example, the current calculations of the experimental long-term forecasts of the U.S. weather service NOAA are anything to go by, August will continue to look bleak. In the trends, the month is predicted to be drier and drier in Germany from one calculation run to the next. This means, for example, that the problems caused by falling water levels on the rivers are likely to become ever greater – especially as the seasonal minimum does not actually occur until late summer or early fall.
