Johnson has hinted at how Black Adam will alter the balance of power in the DC Extended Universe ever since the movie’s announcement. In every Black Adam trailer, the title character is seen catching rockets, punching fighter aircraft out of the sky, and squaring off against a variety of superheroes to demonstrate his might. In order to promote Black Adam and its position inside the DC Extended Universe, Johnson recently made an exciting appearance at San Diego Comic-Con. Johnson teased how Black Adam will affect the future of the DCEU in an interview with Screen Rant while in the WB press line at SDCC. The actor made reference to how his character will alter the hierarchy of the franchise, but he also mentioned how he will change the tone and plot. Johnson remarked:
“That footage is a reflection of our tone. That footage is also a reflection of our director’s vision, who wanted to create something that was different; who wanted to create a movie that was disruptive. But also he wanted to create a movie that would start the pendulum swing in the DC universe. In addition to the hierarchy of power that I’ve been talking about, this pendulum swing [will] usher in a new era of the DC Universe. A new antihero era; a new era of tone, and a new era of story. And also, it’s this incredible opportunity that we have at Seven Bucks Productions for Black Adam’s storytelling to build out the DC Universe with disruption and with respect. Listening to the fans, because they’ll always guide you.”
It’s intriguing that Black Adam marks a significant change for the DC Extended Universe because The Flash, which will be released in 2023, is also being promoted as a pivotal film. One has to question how much of an influence Black Adam will truly have before the DCEU is reset as that multiverse-exploring movie is reported to be a soft relaunch of the franchise. In addition, there are reports that, after Black Adam, certain Justice Society members may have their own spin-off movies. People who are willing to go back include Hodge and Centineo. In terms of Johnson himself, it’s unclear what lies ahead for him after Black Adam, although it seems quite probable that he will return.
