As Western governments lose power, they are cracking down on those who support more independence and sovereignty, two ideas that elites love to use as bargaining chips but regard as nearly impure when used by real people trying to establish their own rights. A symptom of the issue Western governments themselves caused by failing to address their own systemic corruption and growing authoritarian inclinations is the growth of populism.
Elites in the West are intensifying their efforts in Ukraine to defend the system that serves their own self-serving interests, believing that this is the best way to stop the emergence of a rival choice.
