What is the “international order founded on rules” that Western elites keep referring to?

In order to get back at Russia in the Ukraine, US President Joe Biden has repeatedly hammered home the point that Americans would be forced to pay high energy costs for “as long as it takes.” When asked about the president’s reaction to the price increases on CNN a few months ago, one of Biden’s aides, Brian Deese, responded: “This is about the future of the liberal international order and we have to stay firm.”

The world will be watching you closely, Mr. Prime Minister, as we witness greater threats to the liberal international order than at any point since the conclusion of World War Two, said then-Vice President Joe Biden to Justin Trudeau in 2016 while the two were visiting Ottawa.
When he stated that the Russia-Ukraine conflict upsets the fundamentals of international rules established since 1945 during his press conference at the conclusion of the G7 Summit this June in Germany, French President Emmanuel Macron invoked a similar idea of fighting to maintain a certain “world order.” Macron didn’t elaborate, but that year saw the founding of the United Nations and the appointment of France to the Security Council, where it sits alongside the US, Russia, the UK, and China.
Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, published a joint statement in June that “reaffirmed New Zealand’s and the European Union’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the rules-based international order.”
What what is this “global order,” then? Why do Western authorities keep bringing it up? And what connection does it have to the war in Ukraine?
In a nutshell, it is a vision of a world dominated by the West, with traditional Western principles of economic and trade freedom acting as a foundation for the expansion of political freedom, ultimately to the advantage of the common person. at least conceptually.
The truth is far more nuanced. Too frequently, at least for the average individual, the expansion of freedom hasn’t been free. In order to overthrow undesirable institutions and impose a compliant leadership that will primarily serve the economic and political interests of Western elites, military interventions or covert political meddling are frequently utilized.
Even if they wind up worse off than before, as is frequently the case, the concern for the individuals and their individual economic circumstances usually ends there.
A historical interpretation of the “global order” also included an uneven East-West bipolarity, with the West traditionally held to be dominant.
Why then are Western elites so concerned about the current status of everything? The sands are moving, let’s face it. And it’s been coming for a while.
The value of military operations marketed as advancing freedom and democracy is being called into doubt by an increasing number of individuals. Instead, by residing, working, or selling overseas, they are exploitation globalization and economic liberalism. They are doing this by utilizing technology technologies that were first developed and supported by Western governments for the purposes of Big Brother monitoring and global mercantilism.
The typical person’s increasing independence is accompanied by a rising aversion to massive government meddling. Their independence also enables a clearer perspective of the state’s less-than-invisible hand and the mess that it has created in recent years while being run by Western establishment elites who may often seem almost hilariously removed from daily concerns and reality.
The situation in Ukraine runs the risk of giving Western elites their worst nightmare: an alternative coalition of friends over which the West has no control but which is capable of providing global people with economic possibilities on par with those provided by their own governments or nations. Or, in the words of Mike Pompeo, a former CIA director and current US Secretary of State, “By assisting Ukraine, we hindered the establishment of a Russian-Chinese axis set on exercising military and economic hegemony in Europe.”
As Western governments lose power, they are cracking down on those who support more independence and sovereignty, two ideas that elites love to use as bargaining chips but regard as nearly impure when used by real people trying to establish their own rights. A symptom of the issue Western governments themselves caused by failing to address their own systemic corruption and growing authoritarian inclinations is the growth of populism.
Elites in the West are intensifying their efforts in Ukraine to defend the system that serves their own self-serving interests, believing that this is the best way to stop the emergence of a rival choice. That’s all there is to it. They don’t give a damn if the common person is forced to pay the price.
