Researchers at the University of California Riverside (UC Riverside) have announced a new finding on hair loss. The researchers announced that thanks to the discovered protein, the process can be reversed and baldness will disappear.
Hair loss is caused by the TGF-beta protein
UC Riverside researchers have discovered a protein that controls when hair follicles die. Stating that it is possible to regrow hair when they reverse the process, the researchers said, “The protein in question can be defined as a signaling protein that regulates the division, growth and death of cells. The protein, called TGF-beta, is also found in cells inside hair follicles.”

The protein, which also appears in important functions such as wound healing, is used by cancer cells for uncontrolled growth. Qixuan Wang, one of the study partners, said, “The TGF-beta protein has two opposite roles. It helps activate some hair follicle cells to generate new life. Then it is involved in regulating apopotosis, the process of cell death.”
With the right amount of TGF-beta, cell division is activated. The protein, which stimulates follicle growth, enables hair follicles to grow. In cases where there is too much TGF-beta, cells are directed to apoptosis, and baldness occurs with the death of hair follicles.
Continuing to investigate how TGF-beta activates cell division, the team began to work to determine how it communicates with the relevant genes. The team also explained that even if the hair follicle kills itself, it does not affect the stem cell store.
