US launches Mineral Supply Partnership with several countries for clean energy technologies

At the Supply Chain Ministerial, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the launch of the Minerals Supply Partnership, which will invest with several countries in producing, processing and recycling minerals needed to develop clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and solar panels.

“We deployed a micro-electronic early warning system to anticipate and mitigate disruptions in the supply of semiconductors critical to our production. In the U.S., this has helped keep American workers working at vehicle assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and helped keep factories running in partner economies like Mexico and Canada,” Blinken said.

Noting that supply chain security is critical at every stage of production, Blinken said, “With this ministerial meeting, we launched the Minerals Supply Partnership, which will invest with many governments in the production, processing and recycling of minerals needed to develop clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and solar panels.”

Blinken said that the meeting focused on two main goals, one of which is to address short-term disruptions in the supply chain of the products that affect people’s lives the most, and the other is to create a long-term supply chain foundation against possible shocks from crises such as war, natural disasters or epidemics.

Pointing to the importance of resilient supply chains, Blinken said: “So whether we are addressing short-term or long-term challenges, there is only one way to build resilient supply chains, and that is with partners at the regional level, including at the country and city level, because no country can deal with the inevitable disruptions alone.”
