LeBron James stated in a trailer for the most recent episode of his HBO series “The Shop” that if he were Brittney Griner, he may not want to return to the United States after being held captive in Russia.
How could she feel that America has her back after more than 110 days? stated James. “I would wonder if I even wanted to return to America.”
The Los Angeles Lakers player demanded on Twitter last month that Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden do all in their power to bring Griner home.
Since her arrest on February 17 at a Moscow-area airport for having vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her suitcase, Griner has been detained in Russia. Since then, Griner has admitted wrongdoing and written the White House a handwritten letter.
As is typical, James’ notoriety and sizable social media following led to a range of interpretations of his remarks, with some classifying them as anti-American.
James clarified his position in his response on Tuesday night, claiming that he “wasn’t bashing our lovely nation.”
James remarked that his attention was on how Griner must be feeling after spending more than a hundred days in a foreign country’s detention.
Long story short, #BringHerHome, James said.
My comments on “The Shop” regarding Brittney Griner wasn’t knocking our beautiful country. I was simply saying how she’s probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc inside that cage she’s been in for over 100+ days! Long story short #BringHerHome
