Samsung couldn't compete with Google: App pulls the plug

Samsung Pay doesn’t work on smartphones from other brands, users say. So why did Samsung take such a decision?

Samsung couldn't compete with Google: App pulls the plug

There are many apps that make it possible to pay with NFC. Samsung’s own service Pay is one of these apps. However, the company has started to cut support for Samsung Pay, its payment app for third-party smartphones. The situation looks quite complicated for the company, which has removed the app from the Google Play Store.

Samsung Pay shut down for non-Galaxy phones
After screenshots shared on Reddit, the end of the road for Samsung Pay is in sight. Reddit users noticed that the payment service no longer works on smartphones that do not belong to the Galaxy family. However, the South Korean tech giant’s failure to make any official statement about Pay has raised curiosity.

The Pay app reportedly gave an “Invalid ID” warning to a login attempt made by another brand’s smartphone. However, the situation becomes strange when the same ID is linked to the Samsung account on devices with other operating systems (e.g. Windows).

This oddity, which became quite popular on Reddit, has been solved with an explanation from Samsung officials. In the statement made on Samsung’s social media account, it was stated that Samsung Wallet, which combines Pay and Pass service, will be launched very soon.

We know that Samsung Wallet will only be exclusive to Galaxy models. In other words, the technology giant plans to make a smooth transition to Wallet by removing the Pass service in the near future.

Samsung recently introduced Samsung Wallet, a dedicated digital wallet for users of devices in the Galaxy family, combining Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass functionality. Samsung Wallet, unlike other apps, is exclusive to Galaxy devices.

It is not known for now why Samsung is only focusing on Galaxy models. However, with the Wallet move, it seems that it does not want to compete with services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
