It was stated that 4 of those shot worked in the supermarket, and among the dead was a retired policeman who was a security guard and tried to intervene with the attacker.
The attacker was identified as an 18-year-old white man named Payton Gendron.
Eyewitnesses shared information that the attacker was wearing military-style clothing.
Officials said 11 of the 13 people targeted by the attacker, who came from outside the city of Buffalo, were black.
An FBI investigator at the scene said the incident was a racist attack and that a hate crime investigation had been launched into the attack.
It turned out that the suspect broadcast the attack, which was stated to be racially motivated, live on the social media platform Twitch.
Following the attack, social media platform Twitch announced that it was removing the footage.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she would travel to Buffalo after the incident, adding, “My heart is with the families of the victims and all those affected by this horrific act of violence.”
Erie County District Attorney John Flynn announced at a news conference that the attacker would be tried for first-degree murder and would face life in prison if convicted.
Flynn said they are also conducting a terrorism investigation into the attack.
Payton Gendron, the assailant who appeared before a judge and denied first-degree murder charges, will appear before a judge for the second time on May 17 at 9:30 a.m. local time.
On the other hand, the police announced that they were examining the manifesto that is thought to belong to the attacker and published on the internet.
The manifesto, which is said to be 180 pages long according to US media and believed to have been written by the attacker, states that political elites are using immigration and other policies to reduce the white population and includes the attacker’s plan to kill as many blacks as possible.
In the manifesto, the attacker describes himself as a fascist, a white supremacist and a racist.
The attacker’s manifesto states that he started browsing the 4chan website in 2020 out of boredom during the pandemic, where he first encountered guns and then white supremacist infographics.
Buffalo, the second largest city in the state after New York with a population of 280,000, is located just a few kilometers from Niagara Falls.
