U.S. Defense Secretary Llyoyd Austin and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu spoke by phone. The duo’s theme was the first meeting since the war began.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said US Secretary of Defense Austin had urged his Russian counterpart Shoigu to call for an immediate ceasefire and to open channels of communication. Kirby did not share any other details about the conversation.

On the other hand, it was stated that Russia refused to receive phone calls from US officials since the beginning of the war, and therefore the phone call was the first critical contact.
