The backup system of the WhatsApp app will change soon. It has been learned that the backups to be installed on drive will no longer be unlimited.
WhatsApp currently allows Android users to back up their chats and media files to Google Drive without any limits. Under the partnership between the app’s parent company Meta (Facebook) and Google, users’ WhatsApp backups do not fall off the quota on Drive. It has been learned that this situation will change soon.
WABetaInfo, known for revealing features coming to WhatsApp months in advance, has accessed the codes for a future version of the app. Accordingly, it turns out that the era of unlimited backups in WhatsApp’s Android app will end. Although it is not known how the backup feature will work in the new era, there are several possibilities.
WhatsApp backups may fall off Google Drive quota
First, Google can set limits for WhatsApp backups to be installed on Drive. If this method is used, Android users will not be able to back up their chats and media files on WhatsApp as much as they wish. Of course, it’s not yet clear how many limits Google will set. But ultimately, there will no longer be unlimited backups like now.
On the other hand, whatsApp backups are likely to fall out of the Google Drive quota. As a reminder, Google last year ended its free and unlimited backup support for its Photos app. Since June 1, images and videos uploaded to Photos have started to fall out of the current quota of the Google Drive account.
If the second possibility occurs, WhatsApp backups will take the Google Drive quota, just like the files uploaded to Photos. This means that all content you back up will be included in the free 15 GB capacity (or additional space you purchased as a Google One member) that comes with each Google account.
Free 15GB of Google Drive space won’t be enough
If WhatsApp backups fall out of the Drive quota, the free 15 GB capacity automatically defined for each Google account will not be enough over time. This will inevitably force users to purchase a monthly subscription-based Google One membership.
