British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met via video conference with leaders of the United States, Italy, Poland, France, Germany, the Council of Europe, the European Commission and NATO to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
“The leaders agreed that if Russia attacks Ukraine, the allies must react quickly, including an unprecedented package of sanctions,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
German Government Spokesman Steffen Seibert said all sides agreed that the Russian attack on Ukraine would have serious consequences.
According to the participants, the leaders stressed their shared desire for a diplomatic solution to the current tensions.
In addition to imposing serious sanctions on Russia for such actions, the leaders also discussed preparations to increase security on NATO’s eastern flank, according to the White House.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the leaders want diplomacy to succeed, but are preparing for all possibilities.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Joe Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Polish President Andrzej Duda attended the meeting.
