Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau quarantined himself
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that six of his team had quarantined himself after the Covid-19 tests were positive.
Prime Minister Trudeau stated at an online press conference from his residence in the capital, Ottawa, that three officers from his office and three security guards from the protection team were infected with Covid-19.
Stating that he undergoes regular tests and follows public health protocols such as reducing his contacts as much as possible, Trudeau said, “I have followed the recommendations so far. I have had regular tests with rapid tests. The results so far are negative. You will know it if the test result is positive, I promise. Given its nature, I am going into complete isolation. Of course we will continue to follow public health guidelines.” he said.
Trudeau did not share information about when his staff and security officials learned of the positive test results.
Support programs for those affected by public health restrictions
Meanwhile, the federal government has announced that it is temporarily expanding various support programs to those affected by the new public health restrictions caused by the Omicron variant.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Employment and Workforce Development Carla Qualtrough made statements about the new supports at the press conference they held.
With the new application, employers who limit their capacity by 50 percent or more instead of full closure will be provided with support aids according to the rate of decrease in their income.
The government will also provide a weekly CAD 300 worker isolation benefit to workers affected by the practice.
Finance Minister Freeland announced that the application will be valid until February 12, 2022.
In Canada, upon the increase of the effect of Covid-19’s Omicron and other variants, bars, restaurants, sports centers, cinemas, theaters and schools were closed in some regions, while a 50 percent capacity limitation was introduced in some regions.
Travel restrictions, which were previously eased in the country, were reinstated.
