According to The Australian, Prof. Shima, an aerospace engineer, was scheduled to speak to students at the University of Melbourne.
The pro-Palestinian group “UniMelbforPalestine” gathered near the university and organized a demonstration demanding the cancellation of Shima’s speech.
The group said the Israeli academic works for a number of research organizations funded by the Israeli Defense Ministry and previously served as dean of the aerospace engineering department, “which conducts research on weapons used by the Israeli military.”
A university spokesperson said in a statement that Shima’s speech was canceled due to “security concerns”.
