Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mariya Zakharova said in a statement that they do not want a conflict, but the threat against them will not go unanswered. She also said that if US nuclear weapons were deployed in Northern Europe, they would be targets in a scenario of direct military confrontation between Russia and NATO.
At her weekly press conference on the sidelines of the World Youth Festival in Sochi, Zakharova commented on Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s statements that “it is important for his country to have a nuclear deterrent”.
‘IF AMERICAN NUCLEAR WEAPONS COME OUT…’
Stating that the deployment of US nuclear weapons in Northern Europe will not strengthen the security of the countries receiving these weapons, Zaharova said, “If American nuclear weapons appear in Northern Europe, the security of the countries receiving these weapons will not only be weakened, but will also be clearly damaged.”
DIRECT MILITARY CONFLICT
“Such objects will be a direct source of threat and will inevitably be included in the list of legitimate targets identified by the scenario of direct military confrontation between our country and NATO. We understand that this is exactly what the United States and its satellites strongly want.”
