Rüdiger Lucassen, the defense policy spokesperson of the opposition right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary group, stated that the disclosed audio recording of a conversation between senior Bundeswehr officers about a possible attack on the Crimean Bridge causes enormous damage to Germany’s security.
“The intercepted phone conversation of (Air Force Inspector General) General Gerhartz and his officers causes enormous damage to Germany’s security. It shows a frightening lack of distance from the danger of a further escalation of the war in Ukraine.”
“It also shows the failure of the military counterintelligence service to protect the conversation with high-ranking military personnel and to train soldiers in the handling of classified information,” Lucassen said:
“The Russian authorities consider the recorded content to be Germany’s path to war. However, the officers involved have directly opposed the federal government’s efforts to prevent Germany’s participation in the war. Defense Minister (Boris) Pistorius is clearly not in control of his ministry. It is also clear from the speech that he has a different policy than the chancellor on the delivery of the Taurus (cruise missiles).”
The German lawmaker added that the AfD group has requested information from the Defense Ministry and reserves the right to call an emergency meeting of the parliamentary defense committee.
