China: US politicization of trade issues hurts its own automotive industry

Beijing has reacted to the US launch of an investigation into the potential risks to data security posed by Chinese electric cars

At a press conference held in the capital Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning argued that the US is motivated by trade protectionism and wants to prevent Chinese-made cars from accessing the American market.

Stating that China’s automobile sector is open to all global companies, including US manufacturers, Spokesperson Mao said, “The politicization of economic and trade issues by the US will only harm the development of its own automotive industry.”

Mao pointed out that Chinese-made automobiles stand out with technological innovation and superior quality in intense market competition, not “unfair practices” and said, “We call on the US to respect the principles of market economy and fair competition, and to stop discriminatory pressure on Chinese companies by expanding the boundaries of the concept of national security.”

US President Joe Biden announced on February 29 that he had ordered an investigation into electric cars imported from China due to the potential national security risks of internet-connected electric vehicles to the personal data of American citizens.
