Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Agency confirmed that the plane was shot down in a joint operation with the Air Force, The Kyiv Independent reported. The agency said the downing was ‘another serious blow’ to Russia’s military capabilities.
RUSSIA CONFIRMS PLANE CRASH
Minutes later, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported that “an unidentified plane crashed in the Kanevskoy District of Krasnodar Krai”. A second report from RIA Novosti said that two planes had crashed in the area, causing a large fire to break out at the crash site.
Kanevskoy District is located on the coast of the Sea of Azov, 200 kilometers from the front line of Ukraine.
Officials later said the plane was shot down near the city of Yeysk, about 50 kilometers north of Kanevskoy District and home to a Russian military airfield.
According to the agency, the aircraft was a modernized version of the Soviet-made jet.
