A new study has found that people with large pupils are more intelligent than those with smaller ones.
According to the British Daily Mail newspaper, the Georgia Institute of Technology team conducted thinking, attention and memory tests on volunteers in the study to investigate the link between pupil size and intelligence.
The researchers discovered that pupils can be used to understand individual differences in IQ, in addition to their relationship with excitement and fatigue. In the study, it was noted that the larger the pupil size, the higher the IQ level.
The research team says this may be because people with larger pupils have better results in regulating brain activity in the region associated with intelligence and memory.
The study involved 500 volunteers aged between 18 and 35 from Atlanta, USA.
Tests included the ability to think in problem situations, the ability to recall information over time and the ability to focus even when distracted. Those with larger pupils were found to perform better on tests of attention, memory and thinking.
The study also noted that pupil size was negatively correlated with age. Accordingly, it was discovered that older volunteers tended to have smaller and narrower pupils.
