The US Department of Commerce announced retail sales data for January. Accordingly, retail sales were 700.3 billion dollars in January, down 0.8 percent compared to the previous month. The market expectation was that retail sales would decrease by 0.2 percent monthly in this period.
Retail sales, which recorded the highest monthly decline since March last year, rose 0.4 percent to $ 706.2 billion in December 2023.
Retail sales in the country increased by 0.6 percent on an annual basis in January. Retail sales had increased by 5.3 percent on an annual basis in December last year.
In the period in question, the highest rate of decline in sales was observed in stores selling building materials and garden equipment, miscellaneous store retailers, gas stations and motor vehicles and parts.
In the same period, sales in furniture stores and food and beverage stores increased.
