Surprising Success from Netflix's 'Haunt' Movie: It Terrifies Audiences!

The obscure 2019 horror film “Haunt” has unexpectedly climbed to the top of Netflix’s UK film chart, leaving viewers proclaiming it as “terrifying.”

Currently holding the highest position on the chart, “Haunt” surpasses Netflix originals such as the animated film “Orion and the Dark” and the Kevin Hart thriller “Lift.” It even outshines the star-studded action movie “Ambulance,” featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, which was added to the platform on February 2.

The remarkable popularity of “Haunt” is surprising considering its extremely limited release in US cinemas in 2019 and the absence of a theatrical run in the UK.

The plot of “Haunt” centers around six teenagers attending a haunted house attraction on Halloween, promising to turn their nightmares into reality. Once inside, they discover the authenticity of the promise as they become the targets of a trio of masked killers, leading to stalking and murder.

Viewers have taken to social media to express their astonishment at the film’s chilling impact. One Twitter user wrote, “Well, ‘Haunt’ on Netflix is pretty terrifying, isn’t it?” Another praised the film, stating, “Currently watching ‘Haunt’ on Netflix, and it’s giving me anxiety on the highest scale. Unlocked a new fear of horror houses and chainsaws.” Another viewer labeled the film a “must-watch.”

The film’s success shouldn’t be entirely unexpected, considering that “Haunt” is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo behind the 2018 horror hit “A Quiet Place.” The latter, starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, grossed an impressive $341 million on a budget of just $17 million. A sequel was released in 2021, and a prequel is scheduled for release this year.

In 2023, Beck and Woods collaborated on the Adam Driver-starring dinosaur film “65,” which, although slightly less popular, showcased their versatility.

Recently, Netflix viewers praised the “underrated” Sandra Bullock comedy “The Lost City,” catapulting it to the top spot on the service’s UK film chart.

The current most popular series on Netflix is the limited series “Griselda,” featuring Sofia Vergara as the real-life Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.
