Jim Carrey gives up retirement for a movie

Jim Carrey is coming out of retirement to reprise his role as mad scientist Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, due out next year.

The 62-year-old actor and comedian said he was quitting acting in 2022 and claimed that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be his last movie.

At the time, he told Access Hollywood, “If the angels bring me some kind of script written in gold ink that says it would be really important for people to see, I can keep going, but I’m taking a break.”

It looks like the star best known for Dumb and Dumber has struck gold, as Variety has confirmed that Carrey will return to the big screen in the third installment of the action-adventure comedy franchise based on Sega’s popular video games.

In the final scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik tumbled to the ground from a giant robot, and the fall was probably fatal. However, in the scene after the credits, it was revealed that his body was never found.

On Friday, February 2, the series hinted at Carrey’s return on social media with a video featuring Dr. Robotnik’s evil laugh.

“You all thought I was gone, but I was only underground. What you see is only a #shadow of things to come,” the post read.

Best known for his roles in films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show and The Mask, the actor has taken a long break from major acting work in the past. His role in the first Sonic the Hedgehog, released in 2020, was his first major role since the 2014 sequel to Dumb and Dumber.

During this time, however, he also starred in the Showtime series Kidding, as well as the smaller films The Bad Batch and Dark Crimes.

Explaining the reason for his possible retirement, Carrey said the following:

I really love my quiet life, I really love putting paint on canvas, I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like I’ve done enough (and this is something you’ll never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists). I’ve done enough. I am enough.

Carrey, who celebrated his 62nd birthday last month, astonished his fans with his “crazy” celebrity guest list.

Jeff Ross, the stand-up comedian often referred to as the “General of Sarcasm,” shared a photo from the night in an Instagram post that read, “Last Supper! Happy Birthday Jim Carrey! We love you,” he wrote.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters on January 17, 2025.
