Those of you who played Tekken 8 need to know this!

Understanding the intricacies of in-game blocking mechanics can give you a leg up on other players. This guide will be your first step towards mastering blocking techniques.

Defense in Tekken 8 is an essential part of your gameplay because if you’re not constantly on the offensive, there will be moments when you’ll need to deal with your opponent’s attacks. While the defense mechanics haven’t changed drastically throughout the Tekken series, if you’re not familiar with the system, you’ll need an explanation of it, and unfortunately the in-game tutorials don’t cover it. Here’s what you need to know about how to defend in Tekken 8.

If you’re playing Tekken 8, you need to know this!

To defend in Tekken 8, you need to press the left stick or d-pad backwards away from your opponent, which will deflect any incoming damage. You can also low block by pressing back and down at the same time to defend against low-level attacks, so you’ll need to switch between the two types of defense when your opponent mixes up their attacks. If your opponent has Heat mode active, playing defense will not completely block incoming damage, so you will need to avoid their attacks or go on the offensive.

If you’ve ever played fighting games like Mortal Kombat, you might be used to pressing a special ‘Block’ button to deal with incoming attacks. In fact, the way to defend in Tekken 8 is so intertwined with the series itself that I couldn’t find an in-game reference to it when scanning through the hundreds of moves shown in the help menus or characters’ Move List. Still, now that you know how to do it, you can go out and practice your defense and start becoming a well-rounded fighter.
