According to The New York Times, Chad Greene, a researcher and employee of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and his team created the map based on satellite images taken from 1985 to 2022.

The map combines more than 200,000 images of glaciers, covering almost all of Greenland.

Analyzing them, researchers found that Greenland is losing an average of 30 million tons of ice per hour.

The data showed that Greenland melted 20 percent more than predicted.

Greenland has also lost nearly five trillion tons of ice since 1992.

Greene said that almost every region of Greenland was melting at the same time and the glaciers were retreating.

Researchers said that additional freshwater sources from melting glaciers could accelerate the collapse of ocean currents.

It was reported that there was a rise of approximately 13 millimeters in sea level due to these melts.

Of the more than 200 glaciers included in the study, only one was found to have grown since 1985.

The results of the study were published in the journal “Nature”.
