The story of a construction worker who accidentally shot himself in the eye with a nail gun has been revealed by scientific research.
The case report, published on January 9th in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Cureus, focuses on a work accident involving a foreign worker in Malaysia.

A 30-year-old construction worker was trying to repair the pneumatic nail gun he was using when it malfunctioned and the nail stuck inside suddenly shot out and hit his left eye.
The worker, whose eye was covered in blood, was rushed to the hospital. It was reported that the patient’s brain functions were normal in the first tests.
A CT scan at the Sultanah Bahiyah hospital in Malaysia showed that the three-centimeter nail had pierced the worker’s eye socket and penetrated into the frontal lobe of the brain. The worker was then rushed into surgery.
Doctors found that the nail did not damage the main arteries and olfactory nerves. The injury to the man’s eye socket was also partially treated.
The patient was kept in intensive care for a while and survived the horrific incident without brain damage. Discharged after 5 days, it was reported that the worker first regained his sight but later partially lost it.
The worker later returned to his country and his health condition could not be monitored.
No information on the patient’s nationality, identity or when the incident took place was shared.
The study noted that this case serves as a warning and reminder of the importance of safety measures and the use of protective equipment in the workplace.
