Australia suffers internet and network outage affecting millions of people

Optus, Australia’s second largest telecommunications company, has experienced internet and network outages affecting more than 10 million users.

Optus Chief Executive Kelly Bayer Rosmarin announced that the outage began at 04:00 local time, ABC News reported.

While users criticized Optus for not informing them about the outage, Rosmarin said in a statement hours after the outage that teams were working on the issue and that internet and network services were being restored.

Rosmarin pointed out that the outage could last for a few more hours and emphasized that they would work non-stop until the problem was fixed.

While it is not yet known whether a cyber attack caused the outage, there were disruptions in health, transportation and payment systems across the country due to Optus being out of service.

Optus came to the agenda in 2022 when the information of 10 million customers was stolen by hackers.
