The feature, which became available in the United States and Canada in November, will be available free of charge to iPhone 14 owners for the first two years. On the day the feature was launched, Apple announced that Emergency SOS via satellite will expand to four new countries in the next few months.
Apple made emergency satellite communications available to users in Australia and New Zealand on Monday. The company announced that users with iPhone 14 in the region will be able to contact emergency services and share their location with friends and family where cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is not available.

Due to the low bandwidth of satellite communications, Apple uses a special compression technology to send messages quickly, the company said. In emergencies, users will be able to activate satellite connectivity by tapping the power button five times quickly, holding down the power and volume buttons, or dialing 000.
“Our new models have special components deeply integrated into the software to allow antennas to connect directly to a satellite,” Apple said on its website. Users will be able to text emergency services when out of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. This can take several minutes as satellites are moving targets with low bandwidth. Since every second counts with Emergency SOS via satellite, iPhone asks a few vital questions to assess the user’s situation. After answering the questions, the device shows them where they need to direct their phone to connect to the satellite. During this process, the emergency call is transmitted to the centers where Apple-trained experts are located.” It is estimated that satellite connection technology will come to our country in 2024 at the earliest.
