“In a way, these systems know much less about the real world than the cat next to you”

Facebook’s artificial intelligence researcher, Frenchman Yann LeCun, told France Inter on Wednesday that ChatGPT is “not really revolutionary”.

The big breakthrough in AI will instead come through mechanical personal assistants, LeCun said: “Yes, it’s a good product. But it is not that innovative in terms of the associated science and technology.”

He said that the texts in which ChatGPT answers the questions of its users contain a lot of human knowledge, but it is superficial.

“For example, it doesn’t contain concrete, real-world knowledge. So, in a sense, these systems know much less about the real world than the cat next to you,” he emphasized.

As for the most important innovations expected in the next 10 to 15 years, LeCun, a professor at New York University, mentioned two types of products. Referring to the expectation of virtual reality glasses that can synthesize virtual images into the real world, LeCun said, “We will interact with the help of intelligent virtual assistants that will have intelligence similar to human intelligence in some moments, and even exceed it in some areas. These assistants will help us in our daily lives, allowing us to spend more time on the things we care about. For example, we will not have to spend an hour on the phone to talk to a plumber or social security officer.”
