Russia: Ukraine plans to occupy Transnistria

2 mins read

The Russian Defence Ministry has accused Ukraine of planning to invade Transnistria, which is separated from Moldova. In a statement issued by the ministry today, it quoted Kiev as planning an attack, alleging that Russian forces had attacked Ukraine from Transnistria as a pretext for invasion.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said the West had instructed a halt to any interaction with the Moscow-backed Transnistrian administration, the Russian news agency TASS reported. The predominantly Russian-speaking region seceded from Soviet Moldova in 1990, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, pro-Russian separatists waged a bloody war against government forces in Moldova.

“We do not see any military risk on Moldova’s borders in the near future, but there are sabotage operations and coup attempts against the government,” Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu told the Financial Times in an interview yesterday.

Stating that the Moldovan opposition is planning a coup against the government in order to change the constitutional system in partnership with Russia, Moldovan President Maia Sandu called on the Moldovan parliament to increase security measures in the country.

“The information I received from Ukraine about Russia’s plan to overthrow the government in the country in partnership with Moldovan opposition forces is correct,” Sandu said, emphasising that Russia poses a threat to Moldova’s security.

In a previous statement, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy said that Ukraine had intelligence that Russia was preparing a plan to undermine the democratic system in Moldova.
