Two works by Salvador Dali stolen last year found in Barcelona

Two paintings by the world-famous artist Salvador Dali, worth 300,000 euros, stolen in Barcelona last year, have been found and returned to their owners, according to a statement from authorities in Spain.

The two paintings were stolen from an apartment in an affluent neighborhood in January 2022. According to a statement by the Regional Police Department of Catalonia, the investigation traced three brothers specialized in robbery.

After police found the two works, the first depicting Catalan villagers and the second showing traditional dancers from the region, they brought them to the Gala Salvador Dali Foundation for experts to determine their authenticity.

According to a statement from the foundation, experts were able to confirm, based on technical analysis and documentation provided by the owners of the two paintings, that they were completed by the Catalan artist in 1922 when he was 18 years old.

This is not the first time the three brothers, aged 50, 53 and 55, have stolen works of art. The brothers are accustomed to breaking into homes in the absence of their owners and stealing artworks, coin collections and other antiquities, the French news agency AFP reported.

They were previously arrested in May 2022, along with two other men, and were in possession of five works said to be by Juan Miro. In addition to these five works, they were in possession of 55 watches and other luxury items. However, the authenticity of these works has not yet been confirmed, nor have they been returned to their owners. The five detainees were released on judicial control conditions.
