Authorities in Germany say a 72-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly turning off her hospital roommate’s ventilator twice because she was disturbed by the noise it made.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Mannheim, in the southwest of the country.
According to a joint statement released yesterday by the Mannheim prosecutor’s office and police, the suspect turned off her 79-year-old roommate’s ventilator “because she was disturbed by the noise”.
Hospital staff intervened and informed the patient that it was vital that she be given oxygen.
However, in the following hours, the old woman once again intervened with the ventilator.
The 72-year-old suspect is on trial for attempted murder.
Authorities reported that the patient, whose ventilator was turned off, was revived with the intervention.
The treatment of the patient, who is not in danger, continues in intensive care.
