Disney has canceled plans for a more female-focused Pirates of the Caribbean film, according to Margot Robbie

Robbie told Vanity Fair that she had been working on the new Pirates of the Caribbean film for some years, but it never really got off the ground since Disney apparently opted not to go with it.

“We had a concept and we were developing it for a long time, years ago, to have more of a female-led — not completely female-led, but a different sort of tale — which we thought would’ve been very amazing,” Robbie continued. “But I suppose they don’t want to.”

In 2020, it was revealed that Robbie would appear in a new Pirates of the Caribbean film penned by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson. The film starring Robbie was not meant to be a sequel to the long-running franchise, but rather an original narrative with fresh characters.

Producer of the Pirates franchise Jerry Bruckheimer was rumored to be on board to produce both this film and a second new Pirates film that was claimed to be in the works with Chernobyl inventor Craig Mazin. There has been no news on whether Mazin’s revamp would continue.

Bruckheimer confirmed this year that two scripts for a new Pirates of the Caribbean film were being written — one with Robbie and one without her. He didn’t say who would star in the other film, but he did say Johnny Depp’s “future is yet to be determined.”

The previous Pirates films, featuring Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, made more than $4 billion worldwide.

The most recent installment in the swashbuckler series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was rated “decent” by IGN, noting that it should presumably be “the final journey” for Sparrow and his crew.
