European Union (EU) Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said on Saturday that the EU expects Russia to fulfill its energy contracts despite the effects of the war.
“We expect Russia to respect the contracts it has signed,” Gentiloni said in response to a question about Moscow’s announced suspension of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline for technical reasons, Reuters reported.
“Even if energy continues to be used as a weapon, the European Union is ready to respond with plans for high levels of gas storage and energy savings during the winter months,” Gentiloni, who served as Italian Prime Minister between 2016 and 2018, said at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Italy.
