Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, thinks that common career advice is “a total crock.”

“If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life,” is a common adage. But not, in Tim Cook’s opinion.

Apple CEO Tim Cook disagrees with the adage that “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” That is a complete farce, the tech billionaire said.

During his keynote address (see video below) at the Tulane University graduation ceremony in 2019, Cook shared his professional advice.

Cook remarked at the address at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, “There is a saying that if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.”

Cook responded to laughter from the audience, “At Apple, I discovered that is a huge crock.”

He continued by saying that you must put in a lot of effort if you want to succeed at something you are truly passionate about. The weight of that job won’t seem as hefty, though.

The instruments will feel light in your hands, but you’ll work harder than you ever imagined you could, he said.

“Don’t waste time on issues that have already been resolved when you venture out into the world. Do not focus on what you perceive to be practical. Instead, turn your ship toward the rough waters. Look for the bumps in the road, the issues that seem too enormous, and the difficulties that other people are happy to work around, Cook advised.

Cook appears to be a serious follower of his own counsel. He is an early riser and apparently awakes at 4 am every morning, like many wealthy individuals. Then, he’ll work for an hour before going to the gym, finishing his routine by six in the morning.
