The winners of yesterday's US primaries have been announced

The winners of the primaries held yesterday in the states of New York, Florida and Oklahoma ahead of the US midterm elections to be held on November 8, 2022 were announced.

Jerry Nadler was the victor among the two members of Congress who fought in the polls yesterday as the upper east and west districts of Manhattan were merged into the 12th electoral district.

Nadler, 75, who has represented Manhattan’s upper west side for 30 years, beat his congressional colleague Carolyn Maloney, 76, 55 percent to 24 percent.

Nadler, who is currently the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, was endorsed by Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer and the New York Times.

Maloney was serving as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, another powerful committee in the House of Representatives.

In New York City, known as one of the strongholds of the Democratic Party in the country, the newly drawn electoral district map this year caused turmoil among Democratic candidates, with some congressional candidates changing districts, while powerful members of Congress such as Nadler and Maloney faced off in the same ballot.

In Florida, Democrats nominate their candidate against Governor DeSantis

In Florida, the other state where the primary election was held yesterday, Democrats competed against Governor Ron DeSantis, who is considered the strongest candidate from the Republican Party for the 2024 Presidential elections in case former US President Donald Trump does not run.

Charlie Crist, who ran for Governor of Florida from the Democratic Party, took the lead with 59 percent of the vote against 35 percent of his opponent Nikki Fried.

While Florida’s Republican Senator Marco Rubio did not face a candidate from his party for Congress, Val Demings from the Democratic Party qualified for the midterm elections to be held in November with 84 percent of the votes among his 3 opponents.

In the state of Oklahoma, voters went to the polls for the seat left vacant after Republican Senator James Inhofe, who entered Congress in the 2020 elections, withdrew from politics, saying he “could not finish his term in Congress”.

Markwayne Mullin, a member of the House of Representatives supported by Trump, won the race with 65 percent against 34 percent of the votes of his rival, former state assembly Speaker T.W. Shannon.

5 more US states to hold primaries

There are 5 more states in the country that will hold primaries before the midterm elections. Massachusetts on September 6, Delaware, New Hampshire and Rhode Island on September 13 and Louisiana on November 8.

Since Louisiana will choose its Senate candidate on December 10, 2022, the primary will take place on the same day as the midterm elections.

In the midterm elections on November 8, 2022, Americans will go to the polls for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate.

Under the US electoral system, all members of the 435-seat House of Representatives go to the polls every two years, once in the general election, when the US president is elected, and once in the midterm elections.

One-third of the members of the 100-member Senate wing of Congress, elected for six-year terms, are also up for re-election every two years.

Before the elections, candidates run in primaries, or “primaries”, in their districts, beating out other candidates from their own party and getting on the ballot to compete with the opposing party’s candidate at the ballot box.
