The US Embassy in Kiev urged US citizens to leave Ukraine due to information that Russia may strike civilian infrastructure and government buildings in the coming days.
“The U.S. State Department has information that Russia is accelerating its efforts to launch attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities in the coming days,” the embassy said in a written statement.
“The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to leave Ukraine using private ground transportation options if safe to do so,” the statement said, adding that Russia’s attacks in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to civilians and civilian infrastructure.
In the run-up to the anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24, the Kiev administration had made statements that Russia might target some cities, including the capital.
The Kiev military administration banned public gatherings in Kiev on August 22-25, citing the possibility of Russian attacks.
In the city of Kharkiv, located on the Russian border, a 36-hour curfew was declared on August 23, effective from 19.00 local time.
