In Potsdam, anyone who buys electricity from a parish has to pay much less than normal customers. It is particularly cheap for Catholics. Resistance is now being voiced against this.
Potsdam – Electricity is becoming more and more expensive – but the price increases vary greatly depending on the region, provider and tariff. The Wuppertal municipal utility, for example, is increasing its electricity price by around 33 percent from October 1. At Energieversorgung Oberhausen, the percentage increases for electricity and gas are almost the same and range between 24 and 34 percent.

Price increases for electricity: “Many municipal utilities will follow suit”.
“There is a larger wave of price increases,” energy expert Udo Sieverding from the consumer center of North Rhine-Westphalia told Handelsblatt. “There will definitely be many more municipal utilities following suit.”
The comparison portal Check24 has registered 124 cases of increases in electricity prices by basic suppliers for August, September and October alone. About two million households were affected by this, it said. “In September, the increases amount to an average of 47.5 percent,” said a spokesman.
Stadtwerke Potsdam: Cheaper electricity for church members
Not affected by the current price explosions: Christians in Potsdam – as long as they, as church members, obtain electricity through their congregation. Because for them there is already since 2004 own green electricity tariffs – this was negotiated at that time on desire of the church members for an ecological alternative with the Potsdamer public utilities.
Apparently, the extra tariff under the title “Green Electricity – Exclusively for Church Members” is now paying off financially, because it does not seem to be affected as much by the price increases. As the order form shows, Protestant church members living in Potsdam pay 30.59 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity.
