A polar bear that entered a camp on Norway’s Svalbard Island and injured a French tourist was shot dead.
According to French media reports, a polar bear entered a camp of about 25 hikers on the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway this morning.
The polar bear wounded a French female tourist in her 40s in the arm and was shot to get away.
The tourist was airlifted by helicopter to Longyearbyen, the archipelago’s largest city.
Local security forces shot the polar bear to death because of its extensive injuries.
According to 2015 data, there are about 1,000 polar bears in Norway’s part of the Arctic, of which about 300 live in the Svalbard archipelago.
