The timer that came with Google Search has vanished, and no one has explained why

The helpful function appears to have vanished last month

Up until recently, searching for a timer on Google was one of the easiest methods to set one. A ten minute timer would appear when you typed in a query like “10 minute timer.” However, rumors that this function had abruptly vanished from Google began to surface last month. On July 20, SEORoundTable was among the first to report on the disappearance of the timer, using tweets from approximately July 18.

The helpful function appears to have vanished last month.

Although there are many timers available elsewhere on the internet (or as stock applications on iOS and Android), Google’s built-in version was a straightforward, user-friendly substitute. Additionally, the same widget had a stopwatch capability for times when you need to count up rather than down in addition to the timer. The function was first introduced in 2013, giving it a lifespan of over ten years.

It’s possible that an unintentional glitch has eliminated the feature because Google hasn’t explicitly acknowledged its removal. Danny Sullivan, Google’s public search liaison, initially promised to investigate on the problem on July 21 and then stated on July 27 that the team was “still checking on it.” If its absence was caused by a bug, it can be challenging to fix. Google’s request for comment was not immediately responded to by a spokeswoman.

Given that Google has spent the majority of the previous 10 years integrating additional features organically into its search results page, eliminating the functionality on purpose would be an odd decision.

What was once just a list of hyperlinks now has anything from rich snippets that try to immediately respond to your search query to a section just for news headlines and even more specialized features like an integrated airfare ticket comparison tool. All of these seem to be standing still.

Thankfully, the metronome that comes with Google Search is still alive and well, in case you were wondering.
