Germany: The Greens’ Fear of Revolt

The “people’s revolt” will not happen so quickly in Germany. But the Germans will obey the logic of the energy transition faster than the Greens would like: Heating with electricity.

Source faz.net: Should give the citizens of Germany and the EU the feeling that they can get through fall and winter without any new bad news.

One is as necessary as the other. The ECB wants to curb inflation, the driver of which is energy prices, which will continue to rise due to the gas shortage. Habeck’s effort also amounts to averting a deep recession. The extent to which nerves are on edge can be seen in the “popular uprisings” that Annalena Baerbock once loosely painted on the wall.

Russia is doing its utmost to heat up this situation and yet calls itself the guarantor of European energy security. This can only be understood as a mockery of the Europeans, but especially of Germany.

Energy security only without Russian gas

It is true that Russian natural gas is now flowing through the first Nord Stream pipeline again. Should we breathe a sigh of relief? First, it is far too little, and second, only those in the West who could do without it altogether are likely to feel secure.

Energy security is currently guaranteed not with, but only without Russia. Habeck and the president of the Federal Network Agency had to admit that Germany is still a long way off. Even the stricter levels and savings they prescribe will only prevent a shortage if Russia continues to supply.

Progress through regulatory frenzy?

The government’s new decisions have a lot to do with private households, but they are aimed primarily at storage operators, who, faced with tempting prices and tight coffers, don’t take fill levels too seriously and “store out” gas instead of storing it in.

Private households, on the other hand, are far more impressed by the prospect of astronomical gas bills than by regulations and regulatory frenzy. This winter, moreover, they will take the logic of the energy turnaround to heart more than Habeck would like: Heating as little as possible by fossil fuels and as much as possible by electricity. The Greens and the SPD will therefore not be able to get rid of the issue of nuclear power.
