For the first time in France, a woman has been elected speaker of parliament. Braun-Pivet, former Minister of Overseas Territories, won the election for the presidency of the parliament by receiving 242 votes in the second round of voting.

As a result of the voting in the National Assembly in France, 51-year-old Yael Braun-Pivet became the country’s first female parliamentary speaker.

Braun-Pivet, former Minister of Overseas Territories, was elected speaker of the National Assembly with 242 votes in the second round of voting in which new deputies participated.

Braun-Pivet was the joint candidate of French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party and the Horizons and Movement for Democracy (MoDem) parties.

Braun-Pivet was a minister under President Macron.

Fatiha Keloua-Hachi, the joint candidate of the “New Social and Ecological People’s Union” (Nupes) alliance, which includes Indomitable France (LFI), the Green Party (EEVL), the Socialist Party (PS) and the Communist Party (PCF), received 144 votes, Annie Genevard, the candidate of the Republicans (LR), 60 and Nathalie Bassire 16.

Only 462 deputies voted in the second round of voting.

The French National Assembly consists of 577 seats in total.
