Japan’s government has urged residents of the capital Tokyo and surrounding areas to use less electricity during the heatwave sweeping the country.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that energy demand is expected to increase “extremely” this afternoon.
The ministry advised people to turn off unnecessary lights but to continue using air conditioners to avoid heatstroke.
Japanese authorities have been warning of electricity shortages for weeks as temperatures rise.
Over the weekend, temperatures in Tokyo soared above 35 degrees Celsius. In Isesaki, northwest of the capital, temperatures reached a record high of 40.2 degrees Celsius.
